What aeration and overseeding includes

  • Core aeration across the lawn, pulling small plugs of soil
  • Plugs left on the lawn to break down
  • Overseeding with a cool-season grass seed mix
  • Extra seed on thin and bare spots
  • Watering instructions for the weeks after

Why aerate and overseed

Foot traffic, mowing and New England's heavier soils pack the ground over time. Packed soil keeps water, air and roots from getting down, and the lawn thins out.

Aeration opens the soil back up, and seed dropped into those openings has good soil contact, so new grass fills in the thin spots.

Why late summer is the time in New Hampshire

UNH Cooperative Extension puts the best seeding window at mid-August to early September. The soil is still warm, crabgrass is winding down, and new grass has time to root before winter.

Spring seeding can work, but the grass has to race the summer heat and the crabgrass.

Questions

Aeration & overseeding: good to know

Do I need to water after overseeding?

Yes. Keep the seeded areas lightly moist until the new grass sprouts, then water less often and more deeply. We leave you instructions.

What month should I aerate and overseed?

Mid-August to early September. Aeration alone also works in early spring, when grass grows fast, but seed takes best in late summer, so we do both together then.

Do you pick up the soil plugs?

No. The plugs are left on the lawn and break down on their own within a couple of weeks of rain and mowing.

How often should a lawn be aerated?

Heavily used or compacted lawns benefit from it most years; others less often. We'll tell you what yours needs at the estimate.
