What mulching and edging includes

  • A fresh edge cut between the lawn and each bed
  • Weeds pulled from the beds
  • Old mulch loosened up
  • Fresh mulch spread about 2 to 3 inches deep
  • Mulch kept at least 3 inches back from trunks, never piled up
  • Debris cleaned up and hauled away

What mulch does for a bed

A layer of mulch holds moisture in the soil through dry stretches in July and August, keeps weeds from getting light, and evens out soil temperature for the roots.

Too much does harm, though. UNH Extension recommends 2 to 3 inches, kept at least 3 inches off trunks, with no "volcano" piled against the bark.

When to mulch in New Hampshire

Late spring, once the soil has warmed up, usually May into June. Mulching right after the spring cleanup gives the beds a clean start for the season.

A light top-up in fall is fine; most beds only need a full refresh once a year.

Questions

Mulch & bed edging: good to know

How much mulch do I need?

One cubic yard covers about 160 square feet at 2 inches deep, or about 110 square feet at 3 inches. We measure the beds at the estimate.

How deep should mulch be?

About 2 to 3 inches. Much more than that can cause problems for the plants and gives voles a place to hide.

Why isn't this priced by yard size?

Two houses with the same lawn can have very different beds. We price mulching on site, by the beds.

Do you spray for weeds?

No. We pull weeds by hand. Spraying needs a pesticide applicator license in New Hampshire, and we don't offer it.

Can you do it with my spring cleanup?

Yes. Mulch and edging fit right after a spring cleanup.
